environment & natureBhutan’s environment friendly policies have been commended the world over. Not for nothing, when Bhutan has managed to preserve 60% of forest coverage. Perhaps, Bhutan would be the first country to have this spelled out in its Constitution.
Bhutan is among the ten global bio-diversity hotspots in the world and is one of the 221 global endemic bird areas. Environmental conservation is a core development strategy that Bhutan has embraced in its commitment toward balancing development and conservation. This commitment stems from the middle path philosophy and sustainability. Bhutan boasts more than 5,400 species of vascular plants, 360 species of orchids, 46 species of Rhododendrons, junipers, magnolia blue poppies and over 500 species of medicinal plants. Bhutan is also home to a wide variety of animals. Among them are some of the rarest species in the world. Animals like elephants, tigers, snow leopards, blue sheep, musk deer, golden monkey and the national animal Takin, to name a few, roam the jungles of Bhutan. Around 770 species of birds are found in Bhutan. |
